Since 2001, China has adopted the international common practice to compile and publish the consumer price setting index based on the 2000 price level as a major indicator to reflect the degree of inflation (or deflation) in China.

With the approval of the State Council, the National Bureau of statistics of the National Bureau of statistics is responsible for the compilation and related work of the national consumer price index, and organizes, guides and manages the consumer price surveys and statistics of provinces, municipalities and municipalities.

The commodity and service items of China's price index are determined according to the data and relevant provisions of the consumption expenditure of nearly 110 thousand households in the whole country. At present, they include food, tobacco and liquor, supplies, clothing, household appliances and services, medical and health care and personal products, pportation and communications, entertainment, education, cultural products and services, housing eight categories, 251 basic categories, and 700 representative varieties.

The consumer price index is calculated on the basis of the price survey of nearly 30 thousand acquisition price points in 550 cities and counties in the country.
