Hanfu It is the abbreviation of the Han costumes: mainly refers to the Han costumes formed in the process of natural cultural development and ethnic integration before the end of the Ming Dynasty.

As an independent clothing system, Han clothing has formed a unique cultural background and national style in the historical inheritance and development, that is, it has formed distinctive style characteristics, and is obviously different from the traditional clothing of other ethnic groups in China and any other ethnic group in the world, and it is also qualitatively different from modern clothing in terms of style.

Han costumes are extensive and profound. Because of its long history, wide application area, and continuous innovation and integration in the development and evolution, it is difficult for those who have less research on Chinese clothing to grasp. As a large clothing system, Han clothing should not be defined only by appearances and simple patterns, but by its dominant style.

So the definition standard of Han clothing can be expressed in the following words: "Going back to Yan and Huang, down to the Song and Ming dynasties, based on the clothing worn by the Han (or Huaxia in the pre-qin period) people, and on this basis, a collection of a series of clothing with distinctive style has been formed through natural development and evolution."

This definition of Hanfu, the traditional costume of the Han nationality, is mainly based on the following three considerations:

First: the nationality of Han clothing, that is, Han clothing is the clothing of the Han nationality. The clothes worn by ancient Chinese Hu people cannot be called Han clothes. The nationality is a whole concept, so the clothing of the Hu people worn by a Han people cannot be called the traditional clothing of the Han people.

Second: the tradition of the development of Hanfu, and the tradition must be divided into two aspects, namely inheritance and unity. The inheritance of Hanfu is shown in that the origin of Hanfu can be traced back to the Yellow Emperor period in ancient China, and has always retained the style of inheritance and continuous development and evolution. The unity of Han costumes is shown in the common characteristics of all Han costumes in the mainstream from the Yellow Emperor period to the Song and Ming dynasties, in the vast land of China, in the time span of nearly five thousand years, and in the space span of millions of square kilometers. That is, the right lapel, large sleeves and deep clothes are typical representatives.

Third: the naturalness of the development of Hanfu, that is, the natural development that is not easily perceived by people when Han people are self aware and voluntary without external force, which is also the regular law of the development of general things or culture. The naturalness of the development of Hanfu is the basis of the inheritance of a nation's traditional clothing, that is, the proper development and evolution direction of a certain thing or culture under its own normal development track. Its direction can be traced back to its source through general laws, and its development direction can also be predicted backward.

Under this definition, in ancient China, in addition to the Qing costumes, as long as the costumes worn by the Han people before the end of the Ming Dynasty, regardless of style, region, integration, differentiation and development, can be called Han costumes, while the modern ancient costumes, except for the Qing costumes, although different from the ancient times, are also reasonably restructured according to the traditional style, so they can also be called Han costumes. The Han style clothes can be easily distinguished from the traditional clothes of other ethnic groups (including full clothes, dresses and modern clothes) with the naked eye. Now this kind of Han style clothes is also called“ ancient costume (except for clean installation) ".

The costumes of the Qing Dynasty, dating back, originated from the costumes of the Manchu nationality. Looking back, they are not traditional Han costumes. Therefore, although it is worn by Han people, it does not conform to the "traditional" elements of Han traditional clothing, so it cannot be included in the category of Han clothing; The origin of the clothes worn by Han people today is mainly from the West“ Tang costume ”The mandarin jacket, cheongsam, etc. are mainly (to distinguish the primary and secondary) traditional costumes from the Manchu, so they cannot be called "traditional costumes" of the Han nationality. That is to distinguish the difference between the clothing worn by a Han nationality and the traditional clothing of the Han nationality as a whole.
